Tell Me Something Really Interesting

Most people say there's just too much information flow, but as a news junkie, and someone who likes to follow current events, I can't ever seem to get enough. Of course, I avoid all the Hollywood drivel, and I don't bother to waste my time on Facebook, so I probably have an extra four hours a day to read through the scientific news, world events, economic issues, and real important matters going on throughout the world. Okay so, the other day I actually ran out of things to read, and long about Friday I'm completely caught up, and looking for more information.

Therefore, I typed into the search engine; "?" The funny thing is that I came to an Internet forum that had a thread with that exact title. It was cool, because there were many interesting things on that page, albeit much of it was akin to Jeopardy questions and incidental information you might find on a computerized Trivial Pursuit game. Luckily, I found enough interesting topics to pique my curiosity, and I spent the next hour or so surfing around learning new things. That was nice.

If you are looking for something really fun to do, and to learn intellectual interesting things, I recommend that you go to; Google Scholar and type in the last name of someone that you know, who you think is the smartest person you've ever met. Then look at what other folks with the same surname have written in the way of research papers. You should be able to find research papers which are available free to the public as you search around a little bit.

You might even find that some of these folks have patented really interesting inventions and innovations. If you dedicate your mind to thinking, you will definitely learn something new. Well, it is amazing how fast an hour can go by while you are surfing around learning new things, and it's good to keep your mind wrapped up at a higher level than some of the nonsense on the social networking sites or the popular celebrity news syndicated media sites.

Another thing you can do is go to a website called "Udemy" and check out some of the academic professor lectures. There are a good number which are free, and there are also many which charge a nominal fee for University level educational videos. Not everything on the Internet is a bunch of garbage, and there is no sense in letting your mind melt, soaking up all that crap. Isn't it time you took it to a higher level? Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

The truth is somewhere but with whose glasses do we try to find it? We will help our own judgement if we look at anything without hoping to find what we believe in.

In 1947, they discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls near Qumran in Jordan. Today we know that a sect called the Qumran sect stayed there and left us an enormous treasure. Around 850 scrolls discovered in caves in the area tell us a different story of many things but in particular early Christianity. While they talk about the same people and things, they have a different variation. The question is which one is correct. Some people such as L.M.Alegro in The People of the Dead Sea Scrolls believe the scrolls are the source books out of which the New Testament emerged. But he had something else to say. He made this remark after he had a futile search for the treasure.

The Sacred Mushroom Theory

According to Allegro in his book The Sacred Mushroom and the cross, the gospels written by the Qumran sect were not describing actual events. He believes they were more based on spiritual visions and quests of the sect members, undertaken after or while they were under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms. So what value should we give to his theory? While this might sound bizarre one should think how sound and sight influence people.

I think the answer lies somewhere between the truth and hallucinations. The truth for all of us. The sect was dedicated and I strongly believe they were very concise in what they wrote down and recorded. On the other hand, they were isolated and probable a bit angry with the rest of society for reasons beyond this discussion. Still this must have influenced their thoughts and not only how but also what they recorded. I think it is unlikely that they made their valuable scrolls while under the influence of hallucinations and if they did, they would have changed this later. One hopes that history will find proof of the truth behind this treasure.

I read around three years of age a child starts to refer to himself as I. Before that, he uses the third person. Before we do this we must remember that being awake does not necessarily mean we think or even remember. This is such as when we have an operation. Perceptual Mind - This is where we are barely aware that we are conscious. Very small babies would be aware that they are, but how deep would that awareness lie? Is the starfish aware that it is a starfish? Simple life is alive yet hardly aware of anything else.

Receptive Mind - This is the birth of simple consciousness. The capacity to interpret that it is conscious is limited. Such as with a zebra in a herd. On the animal level such as a dog, they are aware of smell, sound and other senses but not on a level that it knows its age and future aspirations for example.

Conceptual Mind - When and if a cat could feel shy because of the condition of its skin or its colour in relation to other cats this would have made her self-conscious, something only humans experience. We know we are human and stand apart from other people in how we look and perform. We have a personality and can think about how we look at how others perceive us. This is much further than just knowing what we see and hear.

Cosmic Consciousness - The animal, even the intelligent pet is not able to think about anything except this life. The fact that humans do, takes us to the cosmic level. On this level we have a perception of our immortality and the questions around that. The more conscious we are the more we attain answers to higher questions.

As humans, we go through different levels of consciousness as we grow up. While we may say that, many people only function on the life her on earth it is also true that they must think about death and the effect of death. This ability of a human to think about life after death opens the possibility of attaining mortality is on the highest level of consciousness, the Cosmic Consciousness.

Life of John Dalton

Interest in the Weather:

For the next 15 years, Dalton recorded numerous weather observations. He also collected marsh gas, but it was his observation of gases that first planted the seeds of atomic theory in his mind.

Dalton was the first to realize that atmospheric moisture turns to rainfall not as a result of pressure changes, but because of reductions in temperature, reducing the air's capacity to hold water vapour. He is credited for "Dalton's Law of Partial pressures."

The World of Elements:

Dalton contributed a series of papers to the Manchester Society of which he became president in 1817, a post he held for the rest. of his life. He developed and wrote about his atomic theory of matter. Dalton claimed that the elements, including hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, are made up of atoms - the key idea that chemists had been looking for. His theory was immediately accepted and became the focus of most chemical research.

In the early, 1800's, he announced his "Law of Multiple Proportions" and published his atomic weights and symbols list.'

A Humble Hero Honored:

Dalton literally committed his life to his science. He never married. Prior to his experiences, he was already loved as a teacher. With the success of his atomic theory his reputation and popularity soared, but he remained a simple man, dressed in the plain Quaker style.

In 1810, his scientific achievements were recognized with an invitation to join the Royal Society. Short of money he declined it, but in 1822, the society elected him a member and paid his election fee. The French Academy of Sciences made him the only permitted foreign member.

Final Years:

Dalton and his brother found out they had colour blindness in the middle of his life. In his will he asked for his eyes to be examined for possible physical cause. None was found. He died of a stroke on 27, 1844, aged 78. The people of Manchester gave him a state funeral.

1. To reflect the changes in law made by several statutes. These statutes are: Statues of 2003, Chapter 513, Statutes of 2007, chapter 496, Statues of 2007, chapter 339, Statutes of 2008, chapter 67, and Statutes of 2011, chapter 269.

2. To clarify the Secretary of State's process for handling cases that have gone to an administrative hearing and petitions for reinstatement or reduction of penalty and;

3. To incorporate the Secretary of State's experience in the last decade in dealing with offenses and misconduct by applicants for appointment as a notary public and commissioned notaries public.

The disciplinary guidelines are designed essentially to facilitate due process and give consistency for reviewing applications, investigating alleged violations of California notary laws and instituting administrative disciplinary actions. They are also designed to assist administrative law judges, attorneys, notaries public, notary public applicants, and others involved in the disciplinary process. These guidelines were last revised effective March 31, 2001 to require stricter qualifications for both notary public applicants and commissioned notaries public with convictions.

These are the Proposed Changes,

1. A felony conviction may allow an appointment if ten(10) years have elapsed from the end of parole or probation and the Secretary of State finds the applicant possesses the requisite honesty, credibility, truthfulness and integrity to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Currently, the bar is Permanent.

2. A conviction for a misdemeanor or lesser offense may allow an appointment if five (5) years have elapsed form the end of parole or probation and the Secretary of State finds the applicant possesses the requisite honesty, credibility, truthfulness and integrity to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Currently, the bar is ten (10) years.

3. The explicit statement that a second disciplinary action will permanently bar appointment has been removed.

4. The distinction between willful and negligent actions has been removed due to a 2008 legislative change.

5. New sections 8214.1 (Q) and (R) have been added as grounds for revocation, suspension or denial since they became law in 2008.

6. A new section dealing with the Secretary of State's process for handling cases that have gone to an administrative hearing has been added.

7. The section dealing with petitions for reinstatement or reduction of penalty has been rewritten to make the process clear for the secretary of State and the petitioners.

The Secretary of State's assessment of economic impact shows that there will be no effect of economic impact to, housing costs, small businesses, school districts, state agencies, and local agencies because it is not a "major regulation". Also, there will be no significant statewide adverse economic impact directly affecting business, including the ability of California business to compete with businesses in other states, or impact any jobs in California negative or positive.

In fact, The Secretary of State only finds that the benefits of the disciplinary guidelines are that it better protects the design of the disciplinary guidelines as mentioned here previously.

How To Get Your College Degrees In Less Time

In an era of instants and rush hours, people would prefer short-duration deadlines and goals to meet at a short term. Urgent, ASAP and STAT are our preferences. In this fast-paced track, it is fortunate to have Education jump in to join the race.

Say goodbye to the four long years you have to be stuck into before getting hold of that rolled-and-sealed paper entitled "Diploma", because your four years of tedious waiting can now be shrunk into three years, a few months, a couple of weeks, or even fifty-six days! Life is short, and four, five or six years is quite too lengthy to spend before we taste the sweetness of college credits, so here are some suggestions to cut the crap:

One, go for summer classes. Set aside your out-of-town vacations for now if you want to get things done as soon as possible. Well, there's nothing wrong dating your books, enjoying your fruit juice while listening to your teacher in class, and feeling that summer heat inside the classroom. In a year, there are two regular semesters. These semesters offer the bulk of major classes and some minor ones. Usually, after two semesters, we have what we call our summer vacation, our break. But now, there are already a number of schools offering you another option: getting in class. Summer classes run for approximately eight weeks, more intense yet shorter compared to the typical five months in one semester --- shorter span, same credit value. If you regularly take summer classes, you'd probably be graduating after three years or even less!

Two, take classes (extra) online. Having online classes and completing them could really speed up your four, five or six years in college. A student can take his regular classes and apply for online classes as an additional. One can enroll in his or her preferred school and can take online classes if offered in the same school or from another school. It may be taxing but it's a sure time-saver!

Three, put interest in Accelerated Degree Programs. An accelerated degree program is a college degree run in an accelerated pace and offered by a university accredited to do it.The speedy pace is possible through the implementation of shorter semesters plus experiences or training. Instead of attending the traditional semester holding up to months, one can enjoy an eight-week semester. Walden University and Kaplan University offers Accelerated Online Degrees which can be attained at the Certificate, Associate, Bachelor, Masters, and PhD Degree levels for a variety of majors and concentrations. And enrollment schedules are never a problem because these Accelerated Degree Programs are offered monthly, even twice in a month.

Four, search for dual credit courses, and get yourself to it! Even as a highschool student, you can simultaneously enroll for college and get academic credits for it. This type of system is familiar to some States, and simply relies on a "pass-or-fail" grade received in highschool for the course.

Five, review for CLEP. A College Level Examination Program or CLEP is another way for the college rush. CLEP tests are offered regularly throughout the year, and there are a number of tests offering chances of earning college credits. Many of these tests will be introductory or core classes, and are better to be taken before starting off your college degree program.

Six, get familiar with AP courses and its exams. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are already available. For highschool students, this gives them the chance to earn college credit for core classes, reducing the number of credits they still have to take in highschool. All you have to do is take the college-level course, review and pass the exams. After that, enjoy your credits and a fewer years in college!

So, why wait for four or more years? You have six options to choose from. Good luck, do good in class and congratulations in advance!

Instructional Design Training: Applying a Success-Based Approach

Early on in an instructional design training course or programme, one of the topics on the agenda might be different methods for and approaches to instructional design.

Historically, there are three main instructional design approaches. They are often presented as very distinct, with little common ground between them. Here's a brief summary of each one:

1. Behaviourism. The behaviourist view of the world is relatively simple: we can teach effectively by having learners practice and giving positive rewards for correct answers. The behaviourist theory of learning was developed in the early part of the 20th century and was really the first modern theory of learning.

As alternative theories (described below) developed, they were considered more modern and forward-thinking. Behaviourism got a bad name and became associated with learning that was dry and boring.

2. Cognitivism. The cognitive view of the world is interested in modelling and analysing mental structures to help explain human behaviour. Cognitivists belief we learn better when new knowledge is well structured and in context; they also suggest it is easier to recall newly learned knowledge and information if we can link it something we understand already. Finally, cognitivists believe that learner perception, attention and motivation are critical factors in successful learning.

3. Constructivism. The constructivist view of the world is (as the name suggests) that we construct our own view of the world and, therefore, learn better if we do things for ourselves. Because constructivists believe knowledge is constructed, not transmitted, this construction can only result from activity because knowledge is anchored in the context in which the learning activity happens. Interestingly, though, the more you look in detail at each of these approaches, the more you realise there is a good deal of overlap between each of them.

For starters, they all share a common purpose: finding ways to engage learners and, thus, help them learn more effectively. They share many other characteristics, too. All three theories accept that practice is critical to successful learning. None would argue with giving learners positive reinforcement or rewards for correct answers (although cognitivists and constructivists would argue this alone is not enough).

Both cognitivists and constructivists believe context makes a massive impact on the effectiveness of learning. Both believe the way an individual models or constructs his/her understanding of something is unique. The list could go on.

So instead of thinking about a particular theory as the 'best' or only way to apply instructional design, perhaps it would be better to strive for a success-based approach to instructional design which incorporates elements of all these theories.

This way, rather than obsessing about the effectiveness of a specific theory or approach, you can put the needs and success of your learner at the heart of what you do and apply a variety of methods from all of the theories as and when they are appropriate to the specific needs of your learners.

Creating learning is all about achieving successful outcomes for your learners. A pragmatic, pick and mix approach to applying instructional design approaches will almost certainly lead to a better result for your learners than dogmatically applying a single one.

What Are Tansu?

In modern usage, Tansu is the popular word most commonly associated with traditional mobile storage cabinetry indigenous to Japan.

Consistent with Japan's minimalist aesthetic, the traditional house appeared empty. There were no stationary tables, chairs or set furniture pieces occupying living area floor space. With only a few exceptions, Tansu were not visible in the home except at certain times related to specific situations.

Because Tansu were not intended to be stationary, comparisons cannot easily be made with the great decorative furniture traditions of Europe and China. As mobile cabinetry of convenience, Tansu were used by individuals to keep personal possessions and clothing outside of the season for which they were required, by merchants to store records, inventory or other valuables, and by families for ready access to objects of daily use. Tansu were kept in storehouses usually adjacent to homes and businesses, in house storage rooms, on the raised business area of shops and on some coastal ships for the personal use of the owner or captain. Tansu as a distinct category can be defined as flexibly jointed cabinetry, originally of Japanese origin, designed to be mobile through the use of attached wheels, hardware for carrying or protruding horizontal upper rails for lifting.

Though Tansu were intended to be functionally mobile and adjunctive to house architecture in Japan until the early 1920s, they have gradually come to be appreciated internationally as yet another category of decorative furniture. To the discerning eye, educated through exposure to furniture, Tansu joinery might appear woefully inappropriate in being bereft of dovetails and other "rigid" joints. Not unlike the traditional japanese house, designed to flex when exposed to the exigencies of nature's wrath, Tansu pegged half lap joints were intended to flex when stressed rather then burst. The strategic placement of iron platting in a wide variety of configurations, further helped to insure structural integrity.

With few exceptions, Tansu craftsmen used only Japanese woods. Unlike China which had largely exploited its forest resources by the 18th century, Japan protected its trees as sacred, consistent with its Shinto code. For exterior door and drawer material, Zelkova Elm and Chestnut were favored as hard woods. Paulownia, Cryptomeria and Hinoki Cypress as soft. For Tansu cases and for interiors, Cryptomeria and Paulownia were preferred. Veneers were shunned well into the 20th century.

Tansu finishes fall into two categories: Dry and lacquered. For a dry finish, clay or chalk powder was rubbed into the soft wood surface, then burnished with a reed whisk. For lacquer (Rhus Verniciflua), application could be for simply sealing the plain wood to enhance a natural visible grain or for the creation of a perfect opaque surface of great value.

Tansu designs can be differentiated into two classifications that mirror Japanese history: The Edo period (1603-1868) and the Meiji restoration of imperial authority. Because Edo was feudal in its socio economic structure, rules concerning ownership dominated all stratum of society from peasant to Samurai. Traveling was regulated and conspicuous consumption discouraged through sumptuary laws. Tansu from this time primarily reflect the class and occupation of the owner rather then any regionally inspired originality. With the coming of Meiji and Japan's opening to western ideas and perspectives from 1868, the rigid class structure gradually disintegrated and distinctive regional characteristics could now flourish.

What Harry Potter Taught Us About Learning

If you have read the entire Harry Potter saga and seen the movies, you probably think you know all there is to know about Hogwarts and wizards and magic. But did you realize that, deep down under all that, there are lessons about life and learning? We all (mostly) strive to be better students, whether we attend an online college or are going through a certification program of some sort. Understanding the messages lurking under the surface of a Potions class in Harry Potter's world may help you to become a better student.

The Prefect System

Okay, so Percy Weasley may have gone overboard at times with his prefect duties. However, the fact of the matter is that when you put an older student in charge of leadership amongst their peers, they tend to become very good at helping the younger, inexperienced students. While it is true that there may be some resentment in being told what to do by a fellow student, there does need to be some way for students to learn how to attain leadership and what it entails. Yes, Percy was annoying, but he was also incredibly driven, which is a characteristic that educators should be striving to instill in all students.

Theory and Practical Learning

Learning theory is one thing; practicing it is quite another. While many people would hate to go through more worksheets and busy work than they already do in school, it is important to find different ways to practice what you have learned so you are not essentially cramming the information into your brain for test day. College students are especially good at cramming, which is a terrible practice for those of us studying for classes that may actually help us in future endeavors. Even if they seem to be useless classes (like Divination!), learning how to learn, as redundant as that sounds, is important to continue to practice. We could learn a lot about practice from watching Harry work hard on learning offensive spells for the Triwizard Tournament, knowing his life could be at stake. We should all learn as if our lives depend on it.

Understanding Different Learning Styles

Maybe you are a visual learner and need to see everything before you understand it. Your fellow student to the left of you might depend on auditory learning, and may even choose to record the lectures your teacher gives so he can go back and listen to them again and again. To the right of you, a student may be all about the practice, and will not understand the material until she has had a chance to put it into practice on her own somehow. Depending on the teacher you all have, your learning needs may or may not be addressed, which is why you should take steps to understand what works best for you. At Hogwarts, students are taught in all learning styles, which increases the chance that they will grasp the material faster.

To summarize, we could learn quite a bit from the teaching and learning styles portrayed in the Harry Potter saga, and we definitely should try out some of these suggestions. Maybe you can work harder on practicing the material in your online college courses.
